Life Post Weight Loss Surgery: Exercise - 5 for Free

There's no reason you have to join an expensive gym to exercise. Don't get me wrong I think it is super important to MOVE YOUR BODY EVERY DAY but a lot of people get sucked into a sales pitch, get all gung-ho for about 2 months then watch as the membership fee is debited from their checking account and rarely go. If you are one of those people, save yourself the $$ and try one of these FREE ideas to get moving...

1. Walk - All you need for this is a comfortable pair of shoes. I love to walk around my neighborhood. I love the sights, sounds, smells (OK maybe not all the smells.) I love to people watch, dog watch, baby watch, duck watch. We luckily have pretty decent weather here most of the year so almost everyday I can do what I love. Nature, sun, fresh air... it clears my head and invigorates me... but more important than that it's fun and that makes me want to do it. It's my daily treat to me. My local park is the place I walk the most. I love the beach too (sand is a great calf workout) but the beach is an hour drive away so not feasible every day. When it rains or is too cold I head for the mall (leave your purse in the car or it can turn into an expensive $ walk)

Walking trails Temecula free exercise ideas

Check out TrailLink.com to find walking trails in your neighborhood. Also check with your city's community services department. My town puts out this great free brochure that lists all the walking trails. I stumbled on the brochure when I went to the city hall for a free health fair. I had no idea we had so many trails in my town or that they gave out a super cool free map of them all (Props to Temecula, CA.)

2. Visit the Library - I was amazed at how many exercise DVDs they have... Jillian Michaels, Zumba, Leslie Sansone (my fav.) Borrowing DVDs from the library is a great way to change up your workout when you hit those (normal) stalls. I don't know about you but I get sick of hearing the same voice over and over, especially the cheery ones. You are dying, sweaty, panting and some chick who hasn't broken a sweat is all... "Woo Hoo isn't this great? Come on, let's do 8 more!" Thankfully just as I am about to lose my mind and hurl my TV across the room, it's time to return it. This is a great way to try before you buy too. Before you drop $80 bucks on that Zumba set only to realize you have 2 left feet, check it out at the library.

3. The Internet - YouTube is more than funny kitty and baby videos you can find an excellent collection of exercise, fitness, and dance workout videos, reviews and instruction just a few clicks away. Just type exercise or cardio or some keyword like that in the search box. Many are personal trainers sharing their knowledge for free. There's some good stuff. There's some crazy stuff too but I figure if I'm sweating it's doing some good. Be careful when you first start (standard disclaimer chat with your Dr) I love FitnessBlender YouTube videos. There are some great Yoga ones too.

4. Free Stuff - People have to move and that Tony Little Gazelle or Total Gym that has been covered with clothes in the corner of the bedroom or garage now needs to go. Check freecycle.org, craigslist, Pennysaver/newspaper columns, local Facebook groups, etc... for people getting rid of exercise and sports equipment. Bonus: it's environmentally friendly! You could also drive around early on trash day, practically every week I see something, last week it was a stationary bike. Be sure to check it all out and ask the owner if it's working properly before taking it home. You wouldn't want to get on a treadmill that won't stop and your 2 mile run becomes a 26 mile marathon.

5. Dance - This one is my favorites because you won't even feel like you're exercising. Just turn on some tunes and shake your groove thing. Before you know it you will be sweating and burning oodles of calories. Before I sat down to write this I busted-a-move to The Go-Go's "We Got The Beat." I love Music Choice on my DirectTV or Spotify.com where I have created a playlist of songs I like to dance to. If you have little whippersnappers they'll love this too. Chicken Dance anyone?!

Dance 3-4 songs = 10 minutes do this 3 times a day (before breakfast, mid-day or before dinner, and before bed) and boom you have a 30 minute workout done.

Post Weight Loss Surgery Menus: A day in my pouch

A day in my pouch is a series of blog posts to show what a typical daily menu looks like in my post weight loss surgery world. Yesterday's healthy and delicious menu...

Breakfast: I had a free Starbucks reward so I stopped for those Sous Vide Egg Bites before running a few errands. Have you tried them yet? Tasty little suckers and super soft. I'd give them a try if eggs have given you trouble (laying too heavy) these shouldn't give you a problem. They are both great but I think I prefer the Egg White & Roasted Red Pepper flavor, a little less protein and calories than the bacon version though.

Strategies for Eating Out Post Weight Loss Surgery
Weight Loss Surgery Post Op Starbucks Survival Guide

Lunch: My low carb way of doing a Tuna Melt: a scoop of tuna salad with sliced avocado and cheese sprinkled on top. I used a Starkist Tuna Packets this one was the Lemon Pepper one (a little plain Greek yogurt and some diced green onion.)

Broil till the cheese is all melty and bubbly.

Dinner: I had some cooked chicken (about 1 cup) and I was going to make Tortilla-less Soup but it was 84 degrees yesterday so soup just didn't sound appealing. I had a Spaghetti Squash sitting on my window sill so I half it and nuked it and used it to made this casserole. It was delicious... I'm looking forward to leftovers today. I use this gadget to heat leftovers up and nothing dries out.

Shelly's Pesto Chicken Alfredo Spaghetti Squash Casserole

1 small to medium Spaghetti Squash, cooked and shredded
1-1/4 cups Cooked Chicken, cubed
1/2 cup store bought Alfredo Sauce
2 Tablespoons store bought Pesto Sauce
1/2 teaspoon Oregano
a few twists of Black Pepper to taste
Salt to taste
1/3 cup Shredded Italian Blend Cheese

Half and deseed the spaghetti squash. OVEN: Place open end down on a Pyrex baking dish, pour 1/4 cup of water in dish. Cover with foil. Bake in a 400 degree oven for about 40 minutes or MICROWAVE: Place open end down on a Pyrex baking dish, pour 1/4 cup of water in dish and microwave for 15 minutes or so. You want a fork to insert easily. Allow to cool slightly. Use two forks to shred the flesh of the cooked squash into "spaghetti."

Preheat oven to 350. Mix the shredded cooked squash and all remaining ingredients except cheese together till well combined. Pour into a Pyrex casserole dish. Sprinkle shredded cheese over top. Bake 30 minutes at 350. I like to broil the top for about 3 minutes till golden.

Blend on high. Top with Homemade No Sugar Added Strawberry Whipped Cream and a few multicolored Nonpareils.

Shelly's Homemade No Sugar Added Whipped Cream

1 cup Whipping Cream
1 Tablespoon Sugar Free Torani Syrup (any flavor will do)

Whisk till well combined. Fill whipping cream to the fill line of the whipper. Screw on the top. Insert the CO2 cartridge till it empties, unscrew that. Put the nozzle on, shake a few times and squirt away. It makes a ton, store it in the fridge for up to 10 days just give it another few shakes before squirting. Great on berries, shakes and smoothies, crepes

Healthy Super Bowl Recipes and Ideas

Well it's football’s biggest game this weekend and while I'm not a huge fan (ice hockey and the PBR are more my thing) like most of America I'll tune into the Super Bowl because even if the game isn't so great you've got friends and family, watercooler chat worthy commercials, the halftime show (it's Lady Gaga this year) and of course... delicious snacks. Here's are few of my favorite low carb, protein packed recipes to keep your health and weight loss goals or... touchdowns as the case may be.

Life After Weight Loss Surgery Q & A - Which medications should I avoid after weight loss surgery?

One post-op's thoughts on life after weight loss surgery...

Question: Which medications should I avoid after weight loss surgery?

Answer: Your surgeon or bariatric physician can offer guidance on this topic and should be your source of medical advice. Always tell a doctor prescribing you medications that you are a post weight loss surgery patient and what type of surgery you have had. Ask them specifically if the medication they are prescribing is something those who have had your surgery can take. Confirm this again with the pharmacist when you pick up your prescription. With over-the-counter drugs (OTC), look for active ingredients on the box and when in doubt ask your doctor.

Some people choose to wear a medical alert bracelet post-op. I have a few and while I don't wear them all the time when I travel one comes with me. I have the following info on mine...

Name
Gastric Bypass (month and year of surgery)
No Blind NG Tube/No NSAIDS/ No Sugar
Allergies
Phone Contact

Some sources for bracelets: Lauren's Hope (super pretty), Amazon, Etsy

From the The American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) website...   "...One clear class of medications to avoid after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass is the “Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs” (NSAIDs), which can cause ulcers or stomach irritation in anyone but are especially linked to a kind of ulcer called “marginal ulcer” after gastric bypass. Marginal ulcers can bleed or perforate. Usually they are not fatal, but they can cause a lot of months or years of misery, and are a common cause of reoperation, and even (rarely) reversal of gastric bypass.

Some surgeons advise limiting the use of NSAIDs after sleeve gastrectomy and adjustable gastric banding as well. Corticosteroids (such as prednisone) can also cause ulcers and poor healing but may be necessary in some situations. Some long-acting, extended-release, or enteric coated medications may not be absorbed as well after bariatric surgery, so it is important that you work with your surgeon and primary care physician to monitor how well your medications are working. Your doctor may choose an immediate-release medication in some cases if the concern is high enough. Finally, some prescription medications can be associated with weight gain, so you and your doctor can weigh the risk of weight gain versus the benefit of that medication. There may be alternative medications in some cases with less weight gain as a side effect."

Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs) to Avoid. This is not an all-inclusive list. Ask your doctor all medical questions.

Post Weight Loss Surgery Menus: A day in my pouch

A day in my pouch is a series of blog posts to show what a typical daily menu looks like in my post weight loss surgery world. Today's delicious rainy day menu...

Breakfast: I made Scrambled Eggs with a sprinkle of cheese and bacon. It seems like a Sunday AM when you have a breakfast like Eggs and Bacon, midweek I don't often take the time to make breakfasts that require too much clean-up.

Eggs Bacon Low Carb Breakfasts

More Eggface Breakfasts

Lunch: We're getting RAIN in Southern California. It's real rain too, not our normal sprinkles that we call "rain storms." I have to laugh as someone born and raised on the East Coast (New York, Long Island) when we get sprinkles our news goes nuts... we have banners "Storm Track 2017" and several reporters across the county showing us the sprinkles from different vantage points, some are just standing waiting for the sprinkles to arrive. The news reporters actually have something to report on this time... and it's perfect weather for soup.

I had a zucchini and a yellow crookneck squash in the fridge that I needed to use and I scored a big box of Earthbound Farms Baby Kale at the 99 cents store. I often get random, crazy cool deals on produce so if you are on a budget you might want to check it out. Last week it was one of those cool orange (aka cheddar) cauliflower for 99 cents. Anyway the kale went in this soup my Sicilian Grandmother (Nonna) would have given 2 thumbs up...

Lunch Dinner Low Carb Weight Loss Surgery Bariatric Menus Food Recipes

Shelly's Rainy Day Meatball Garden Soup

1 Yellow Onion, diced
1 Tablespoon Olive Oil
2 cloves Garlic, minced
3-4 sliced Crimini Mushrooms, sliced
1 Yellow Squash, sliced
1 Zucchini, sliced
2-3 cups (uncooked) Baby Kale (or Spinach)
1 (14.5 oz) can Diced Tomatoes, with juice
2 cups Chicken Broth
10-12 Cocktail Beef Meatballs (frozen, cooked)
1 teaspoon Oregano
1/2 teaspoon Salt
a few twists of Black Pepper

In a large pot, saute onions in olive oil till slightly golden, add garlic, mushrooms, sliced squash and zucchini and cook about 5 minutes. Stir and add remaining ingredients. You can use homemade, cooked meatballs but I love those beef cocktail size ones at Costco for this (and it's easy.) Lower heat and cover. Cook 30 minutes. Stir once or twice during cooking time. Serve with grated Parmesan Cheese or Homemade Crunchy Cheese Crackers or I had them with those Oven Baked Cheese Bites I mentioned the other day on the blog.

Dinner: We had plans to go out to dinner (yay holiday gift cards) but the weather makes you just want to watch the Kid's Baking Championship curled up under a blanket on the couch. I made a batch of Lemon Ricotta Pancakes for this coming week, to make  They heat up great, but I also love them cold with a smear of almond butter wrapped in foil on my early AM walk. Dinner was a couple of pancakes with a little Sugar Free Maple Syrup on them.

Eggface Get Well Soon Giveaway

When I'm feeling sick or have a cold it's really one of the only times I crave comfort carbs. It's something from my childhood (it's more about the comfort than the carbs) and most Italian-American kids will be nodding their head in agreement on this... it's a bowl of egg pastina (super tiny pasta) with freshly grated Parmesan and butter. It's what we eat when we're sick. Pasta is not a part of my post weight loss surgery life (my personal choice) so my sick day replacement is steamed zucchini with the same toppings and the bonus is zucchini's nutrients: vitamin C, vitamin B6 and vitamin K makes it a healthier (and equally comforting) choice. These are a few other items I like to have around when I'm feeling under the weather...

It's Giveaway Time!

Post Weight Loss Surgery Menus: A day in my pouch

A day in my pouch is a series of blog posts to show what a typical daily menu looks like in my post weight loss surgery world. Today's healthy and delicious menu...

Breakfast: We're getting some nice winter storms and we sure need the rain (and snow pack in the mountains) but it's putting a dent in my exercise schedule. I missed my morning walks. The sun finally came out this morning so I made the most of it and took an extra long walk. I came back and made myself a Wildberry Protein Shake (Celebrate Vitamins Wildberry Protein 20 Protein Powder, Soy Milk, and a few ice cubes in the blender), it's one of my favorites.

Lunch: One of my lunch go-to's are cold cut roll-ups, sometimes hot, sometimes cold, sometimes in a bento box lunch like today. Though I didn't stay outside long... it was pretty chilly if you weren't moving and we have metal outdoor chairs, Brrrr.

Dinner: Leftovers! I was so looking forward to this. It was dinner last night and it was ahhh-mazing. It was cold and rainy and this hit the spot. I scored a great deal on eggplant this week so I roasted a few trays. Just cube it (you can peel it but I don't), spread it evenly on a baking sheet, sprinkle with olive oil and kosher salt. Roast in a 425 oven (it takes about 40-45 minutes, depending on the water content of the eggplant) I give it a stir at the 20 minute mark and then every 10 minutes after that, you want golden and soft. Place it in the fridge (up to 3 days) great side on it's own with a sprinkle of Parmesan, great in a frittata or scrambled egg bowl, or use it in this recipe...

New Product Alert: Starbucks Sous Vide Egg Bites

A couple of weeks ago I read about this new breakfast item coming to the Starbucks menu and I was so excited. Yesterday, a reader (& barista) gave me the heads up that Sous Vide Egg Bites were now available in stores. I hadn't had breakfast yet so I walked over to my local Starbucks to give them a try.

Sous Vide is a cooking technique where an item is vacuum-sealed and cooked in a hot water bath at a very consistent temperature without the use of added fats or oils. The result of the technique to these egg bites is a tender, velvety texture, sort of halfway between scrambled eggs and a quiche.

I love that Starbucks finally has this bread free breakfast (or anytime really) option as someone post weight loss surgery who has eliminated bread. I can imagine those affected by diabetes, those on a grain-free or gluten free diet, paleo or keto diet folks are cheering this new menu addition too. You know I love them because they are very similar to something I am already obsessed with for breakfast, my Eggface Egg Bites (aka crustless quiches.)

These Starbuck's Sous Vide Egg Bites come in 2 flavors:

Egg White & Roasted Red Pepper, 170 calories (2 per serving), 13 grams of protein - cage-free egg whites, Monterey Jack, cottage cheese, with spinach and fire-roasted red pepper. Vegetarian.

Bacon & Gruyere Cheese, 310 calories (2 per serving), 19 grams of protein - cage-free eggs, aged Gruyere and Monterey Jack cheese topped with a layer of Applewood smoked bacon.

Verdict: I loved them both, I'd bring a friend, each order a different flavor and swap one of them so you get one of each flavor. I suppose if forced to choose, my favorite was the Egg White & Roasted Red Pepper. I love the savory roasted veggie flavor but... I might need another taste test to be sure.

Well Kudos to you Starbucks... I was worried with the elimination of some of the Sugar Free syrup flavors lately (they axed SF Caramel & Hazelnut, still have SF Vanilla and Cinnamon Dolce) that Starbucks was starting to forsake its customers with health needs. This new menu item makes me hopeful.

Now... they are not cheap (prices in different markets may vary) I paid $4.45 for the pair and you can buy a dozen eggs and all the ingredients to make many batches of my egg bites with that but these will be a go-to for me when traveling and on days I'm out and about for convenience. Thanks Starbucks.

P.S. For Weight Loss Surgery post-ops these are very soft and might be a good earlier option. Eggs often are hard going at first (lay a little heavy) but the cooking technique really helps.

Costco Coupon Protein Shakes Recipes

I serve on the Obesity Action Coalition (OAC) Board of Directors and every year we set the goals and agenda for the year at an annual Strategic Planning Meeting. For the past few years we have held this planning meeting in the same city where the OAC's Your Weight Matters National Convention is being held later in the year. This year's Convention is going to be in New Orleans. So I am headed there this weekend! I'll tell you that city with it's Beignets (doughnuts that are more powdered sugar than doughnut) and Bananas Foster (favorite New Orleans dessert, made from bananas, ice cream, a caramel sauce and rum then lit on fire!) could really put a dent in your calories for the day. I choose to use those calories while I'm there on the city's protein packed seafood and instead I made myself this delicious Bananas Foster Protein Shake this morning with a Premier Protein Bananas & Cream (each 11 oz. Ready to Drink Shake has 30g of protein, just 160 calories and only 1g of sugar, an easy and convenient way to meet your protein goals for the day and way less sugar!)

Shelly's Bananas Foster Protein Shake

1 (11 oz.) Premier Protein Ready to Drink Bananas & Cream Shake
1/2 teaspoon Rum Extract
1 Tablespoon Sugar Free Butterscotch Pudding Mix, dry
dash of Cinnamon
a handful of Ice Cubes

Blend ingredients on high till well combined. I topped it (optional) with a squirt of Homemade, No Sugar Added Whipped Cream, a dash of Cinnamon, a Freeze-dried Banana Chip, and a swirl of Sugar Free Caramel Sauce.Yum! I don't advise lighting it on fire though.

After you stock up on shakes at Costco be sure to make some of my favorite Premier Protein "Frappe-style" Shake recipes:
